The following information is from Richard Shuldiner, nephew of Timberwolf veteran Milton K. Abelson, from the 104th Division,104th Artillery . Richard is hoping someone may recognize his uncle from the photos, and provide additional information about him. He has also provided some new information on Timberwolf P.O.W.s. Thank you very much for supplying this information Richard!
*01/109/07 - " I have done some research on my uncle and have come up with some facts you might be interested in. He was captured by the Nazis on April 19, 1945 near Halle Germany and liberated on May 3, 1945 by the 83rd infantry division. he died on June 13, 1945 near Rouen france. All that came from his Yale University obituary. (He left Yale and enlisted in 1942).
What I didn't know was where he was held. In a letter my mother sent to him on June 9, 1945 she mentions "altengrabow." so he was held captive in Stalag 11A Aletengrabow, Brandenburg Prussia. I was able to find this record and maybe that could help people remember him. I read that only 27 Timberwolves were captured. I got that number from: ORDER OF BATTLE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY WORLD WAR II EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS OFFICE OF THE THEATER HISTORIAN PARIS, FRANCE December 1945. Anyway this is his POW record at the National Archives:
File Unit: World War II Prisoners of War Data File, 12/7/1941 - 11/19/1946 in the Series: Records of World War II Prisoners of War, created 1942 - 1947, documenting the period 12/7/1941 - 11/19/1946. -
